Why use a business consultant?
Businesses change, they evolve! If you look at your business now and compare it to when it started, it is highly likely that it will be different; in terms of complexity, staffing, product range, service provision and customer base. If you try to retrace the journey, it will not always be clear how you got to where you are, but what you can do is plan for the future and a business consultant may be able to support you.
There are a variety of reasons why businesses use consultants, here a few for you to consider, at the end of this you may conclude that you do not need one and that is totally acceptable.
A fresh pair of eyes
When you are in a business, you are immersed in its culture, its ways of working and the routines of how it operates, it is not always easy to’ stand back’ and look at it dispassionately so as to see what can be improved or what needs to be changed to go to the next level. Using a business consultant can help by bringing that detached approach, that will challenge how things are done, they can ask the ‘stupid’ questions that uncover the opportunities for improvement, they can challenge why things are done the way they are.
Key skill requirement
From time to time a business may have an activity that is outside the norm, something that is not part of the day to day , for this there may be a need to bring in someone with a specific skill set, EG project management, supply chain expertise etc. A good business consultant will help you to define your actual requirement, what you need, how long for and what the budget should be, they may even be able to identify a suitable resource for you.
Independent mediator
Many organisations have groups with vested interests, different departments see the business from different perspectives; the view from Finance will be unlike the view from manufacturing, this can lead to protectionist approaches, resulting in ‘dead lock’ when major changes need to be implemented. A strong business consultant can facilitate these differing views and bring a ‘balanced’ picture of the ‘pros’ and ‘cons’ of any recommendations that are developed, they can present the business case without any bias and work with the different departments to see the greater benefit.
Above are just a few reasons why a business may want (need) to use a consultant, most consultants will offer a free initial consultation, to help you assess if you have a requirement and how they could support your business during a period of transition. When choosing a consultant to work with your organisation, it is recommended that you select someone with the relevant experience and skill set, but it is also important to pick someone that you feel you can work with, someone that instils you with confidence.
